Wooden Poles on Tuoba’s Sacrificial Altar
【Abstract】 In Pingcheng of the Northern Wei Dynasty, the most significant sacrifice rites were to offer sacrifices to heaven in the western suburbs on April 4 every year, whose central part was to offer prayers, sacrifices and toasts to the wooden poles on the altar. The sacrifice rites originated from Inner Asia, making it indispensable to interpret each segment and the religious significance from the perspective of Inner Asia. This paper focuses on the cultural attributes of wooden poles on the altar. By comparing the sacrificial rites of different people in different times in Inner Asia, it reveals that these wooden poles were not meant to represent the ritual objects, but to hang the sacrificial animals. The purpose of this study is to further prove the view that in terms of the study of Pingcheng in the Northern Wei Dynasty, the Inner Asian perspective is a very important tool, means and even method.
