【Abstract】 Dimethylsulfoniopropionate(DMSP) is an important biogenic organic sulfide that is ubiquitous in the ocean.Dimethylsulfide(DMS), the degradation product of DMSP, volatilizes into the atmosphere to form cloud condensation nuclei which has a negative effect on atmospheric temperature. DMSP is mainly biosynthesized by phytoplankton and some bacteria, and is transferred and transformed in the planktonic food chain and microbial food loop, and then enters into the higher trophic level through the food web. Plankton is a key link driving the global carbon and sulfur cycling, and its role in the DMSP biogeochemical cycling has received increasing attention. We reviewed the sources, sinks, and transfer of DMSP in the planktonic food chain. We also introduced the role of the planktonic food chain and microbial food loop in the transfer and transformation of DMSP. There are still many research gaps about the transmission and degradation pathways of DMSP in the marine food chain. In the future, further attention should be focused on the mechanisms of generation, transmission and conversion mechanisms of DMSP, which is crucial to a better understanding of the biogeochemical cycling of DMSP.
