How Do You Read "blown by the Wind" ?:On the Rules Violating the Laws of Retroflex Suffixation
【Abstract】 A passage from Winter in Jinan written by Lao She has three possible pronunciations( pause) :( 1) bèi fēng er( retroflex suffixation of " er", " Fēng er" read as " fēngr")/chuī dòng. Foot: 2 + 2.( 2) bèi/fēng er( There is no retroflex of " er", " er" is neutral tone)//chuī dòng.( single oblique line has longer pause time than double oblique line.) Foot: 1 +( 2 + 2).( 3) bèi fēng er( There is no retroflex of " er", " er" is neutral tone)/chuī dòng. Foot: 3 + 2. A’s reading( pause) makes the most sense,reflecting Lao She’s language style; B’s and C’s reading( pause) or broken words,or broken sentences,don’t make sense. The rules of " Retroflex Suffixation" should be observed in reading aloud,except in four special situations( assimilation of "natural sound foot",etc.),then exceptions can be made.
【Key words】 " Wind"; Retroflex Suffixation; Natural Foot; Broken Words; Broken Sentences; Make an Exception;
