On Eros Narrative and Ethical Dilemma in Michel Houellebecq’s Novels
【Abstract】 Eros writing is the label and thread of Michel Houellebecq’s works, which brings completely opposite comments. This paper examines Houellebecq’s seven novels, focusing on the eros narrative and analyzing the features of the characters. Based on the analysis and employing semiotic theory, the study explores the narrative function and stylistic role of "sex," combining analysis of the sexual feature of the characters with narrative and stylistic analysis, and aims to discover the social and cultural significance of "sex" as well. By investigating the reasons and purposes of the eros writing, the ethical dilemma of postmodern society is revealed. The eros narrative is the combination of human nature and social representation, displaying the physical and mental outlook of contemporary people and society. Hopeful quest goes together with confusion and hesitation, the infiniteness of which highlights the narrative poetics and ethical enlightenment of Houellebecq’s works.
