【Abstract】 Dancing at Lughnasa is the masterpiece of the famous contemporary Irish playwright Brian Friel. The paper examines the cultural and social functions of the core dance image from the perspective of ritual. The three different kinds of dances in the play bear the features of ritual: the five sisters’ tap dance in the kitchen is the temporary escape from daily life and the release of carnivalesque; the waltz of Michael’s parents is a ceremonial sign of marriage,while Father Jack’s African dance reflects his tolerance, acceptance and integration of indigenous culture. These ritual dances function as psychological adjustment, emotional healing and group healing, reflecting Friel’s appeal for the realization of cross-ethnic commonality and multi-cultural integration in today’s Irish society.更多还原
