【Abstract】 The Chinese intelligentsia had made the transition from traditional to modern in the transitional era of modern China(1895-1925). The transition process, influenced by the change of politics, manifested itself in the separation of the academic identity and political identity. Chen Du-xiu’s experience can help to explain this phenomenon. The tension between academia and politics was already evident in Chen’s early years when he actively against Qing Dynasty. And then, he decided to refrain from talking politics during the New Cultural Movement, which meant that he chose to be a scholar and the tension was concealed; however, his decision itself was still a political attitude which demonstrated politics was seeking to‘find society’. The tension didn’t come up to peak until May Fourth Movement when political activities became social movements to a great extent. The transition of the Chinese intelligentsia is a complex process which implied a divergence. When modern intellectuals who take academics as their life career continued to refrain from talking politics, those intellectuals who dedicated to social movements became professional revolutionaries, which reflects the new face of Chinese revolution.
