Art and Morality in Susan Sontag’s Ideology of "Against Interpretation"
【Abstract】 Susan Sontag opposes the traditional way of interpretation to explore the deep meaning of truth and morality from art works, and advocates that art criticism should turn from focusing on the ideological content and social moral connotation to restoring the clarity and sensibility of art works themselves. However, Sontag does not deny the connection between art and morality. Although she rejects to requiring artists to have a clear moral purpose, she advocates the morality of art, which she calls "new sensibility". The distance between aesthetic experience provided by art and people’s real life experience is very important to cultivate their moral sense, and the style of art depends on this kind of distance. Sontag’s affirmation of stylized art shows her consistent view against the moral education function of art. Although the "camp" advocated by Sontag has subverted the traditional relationship between art and morality, in essence, it closely links art and morality in a broader sense, reflecting a deeper moral concern.
