An Analysis of the Hero’s Cultural Identity in The English Patient Based on Homi Bhabha’s “Third Space” Theory
【Abstract】 With the development of globalization, the communication, integration and confrontation between different cultures mark the formation of the world cultural community, and the issue of cultural identity has become a worldwide hot issue. Using the contemporary post-colonial theorist Homi Bhabha’s"Third Space"theory, this paper analyzes the main characters Ormash and Jeep’s pursuit of"third space"in their cultural identity and new recognition of their own cultural identity during the British colonial period in The English Patient, written by famous Canadian writer Michael Ondaatje. It is believed that this paper can enlighten people today who are in a multicultural world with forming their own"Third Space"so as to reduce the anxiety of cultural identity.
