【Abstract】 In the 19 th century, a number of reforms was carried out a variety of educational thoughts clashed with each other, and various educational schools had long-term heated debates to safeguard their own views. The debate that lasted for nearly a century has seen three climaxes. The first controversy occurred in the early 19 th century, dominated by the struggle between utilitarian education and conservative education. The second debate took place in the 1930 s, dominated by the struggle between classical and modern disciplines. The third debate took place in the mid-to-late 19 th century, dominated by the struggle between classical education and science education. These debates reflect many challenges that traditional English education faced in the criticism of modern education dominated by science education in the 19 th century.
