A Preliminary Analysis of “Identity Boundary” Changes among Returned Overseas Chinese from Indonesia
【Abstract】 Based on the "boundary" theory, the paper discusses the construction of "identity boundary" among returned overseas Chinese from Indonesia, with regards to the process of its formation and changes. The research finds that the "boundary" of "guiqiao" status is not static, but is framed and situational when one encounters others. In Indonesia, imagination and recognition of one’s country of origin has been the core of defining identity boundaries. After returning to China, especially since the country’s Openingup, returnees’ expression of their "guiqiao" identity has been labeled and framed with "Indonesia". The process of evoking one’s memories and reminiscences of transnational experiences takes place within oneself and others as well. Such a change reflects the process of defining and selecting self identities among migrants, and manifests the significance of different identities defined by "boundaries".
