The Paradoxical Narrative of British Women Detective Fictions in the Golden Age
【Abstract】 There is a complicated metaphorical relationship between women, women writers and detective fiction. On one hand, both detective fiction and sensation novels were thought to be a "feminine" form, which has been used by women detective fiction writers for the purpose of disorganizing the rational myth created by men. Women writers criticized the phallogocentrism inside the historical discourse, so that they could rebuild the validity of female identities. While on the other hand, the imperial perspective they used in creation, in return, accepted the sacred power of men from the outside, which not only weakened the critical power of their works, but also provided those texts with a paradoxical feature. This gives a true reflection of the living and spiritual crisis faced by British women during the two world wars, and helps us to reconsider the special contribution of detective fiction to interpreting the modern society in a stylized way.
