【Abstract】 As a non-academic frontier investigator, Zhuang Xueben experienced a great change from an amateur photographer to the representative of early Chinese ethnographic photography, which was closely related to his social circle. Interdisciplinary and inter-field social intercourse had profound impact on Zhuang’s identity transformation, text expression and photographic concepts in different periods. Specifically, the ethnological turn in his style of text writing showed a deliberate neglect and downplaying of the process narrative of image filming and field investigation. However, Zhuang’s photography was valued and emphasized for their social significance to public visual culture. Exploring the social interactions of Zhuang Xueben and its influence on the frontier investigation could help to deliberate the relationship between photography and academics, images and texts from the perspective of ethnology.更多还原
