A Study of People Re-Write the Ban of Yuan Can from Zhou Li——Taking the Concept of Hurting the Horse As An Example
【Abstract】 The word ‘Yuan Can’,which was first written in the sentence ‘prohibition of breeding of the Yuan Can’ in the book of Zhou Li,may express the meaning of bivoltine silkworm, multivoltine silkworm,or their general term. From Han Dynasty, its meaning was gradually fixed into a bivoltine silkworm. In addition, the Eastern Han Dynasty government also promulgated a decree when people raised the ‘Yuan Can’,the government would charge a fine of 100 grams of gold. Zheng Xuan in Eastern Han Dynasty, completed the canonization of the concept of ‘Yuan Can’. His inference that breeding the ‘Yuan Can’should be banned because of its harm to the horse gradually formed a ‘fixed statement ’,leaving a great impact on later generations. However,in the practice of the ‘Yuan Can’rearing,it had already broken through the shackles of the ‘prohibition of breeding of the Yuan Can’and formed the separation and conflict between the‘classic’and the ‘reality’. After Song Dynasty, with the transformation of academic thoughts and the development needs of southern sericulture production, people questioned and criticized it,and turned to the ‘damaging mulberry theory’in part within the idea of the ‘prohibition of breeding of the Yuan Can’from Zhou Li.Although the‘prohibition of breeding of the Yuan Can’thought had limited impact on the actual production of ancient Chinese bivoltine and multivoltine silkworm,it deeply blocked knowledge innovation in the field of sericulture production, and affected the further development of sericulture production.
