Contention in Africa between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War: Motivation,Process and Impact
【Abstract】 With the development of the Decolonization Movement in the 1950 s,African emerging countries as significant members of the third world had increasingly played important roles on the international stage, which aroused the United States and the Soviet Union’s attentions to put Africa as their own strategic flanks and enhanced their competing interests in Africa. From the middle 1950 s to the later 1980 s,the Soviet-American competition in Africa can be divided into three stages. The ultimate failure of the Soviet Union in Africa was the result of multiple factors. The United States and the Soviet Union’s activities in Africa had a significant impact on African countries’ political, economic and social development,as well as the evolution of regional international relations.
