Deep eutectic solvent based on L-proline and oxalic acid has been demonstrated for the first time as an efficient catalyst for synthesis of 4,7-dihydro-1 H-pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridine-5-carbonitrile derivatives via one-pot three-component reaction of aldehyde, 3-oxopropanenitrile and 1 H-pyrazol-5-amine. The key features of this approach include the broad substrate scope, operational simplicity, recyclable catalyst and possibility to scale up giving multigram quantities.
