Do International Co-authorships Improve Research Output for Scholars from Inland China? An Empirical Investigation with Propensity Score Stratification Method
【Abstract】 [Purpose/Significance]In recent years, the phenomena of Chinese inland scholars with international co-authorships have received great attention in academia. By investigating whether international co-authorships contribute to improving research performance, the article provides important implications for inland scholars who wish to establish international co-authorships and improve research impact.[Method/Process]The article focuses on 139 inland scholars of China in the field of technology innovation management and investigates the impact of international co-authorships on research output with propensity score stratification method. [Result/conclusion]The empirical analyses indicate that, there are no obvious differences in research quantity between scholars who are involved in international co-authorships and those who are not; compared with scholars without international co-authorships,scholars who are involved in international co-authorships have higher research quality; however, because of the communication costs, coordination costs and traveling costs involved in international co-authorships,scholars with high probability of international co-authorships have lower research quantity; scholars with medium and high probability of international co-authorships have higher research quality than those with lowprobability of international co-authorships. However, scholars with medium probability of international co-authorships have higher research quality than those with high probability of international co-authorships.
