The Roman Crisis and the Extended Authority of Pope Stephen Ⅲ
【Abstract】 In the second half of 8 th century,Pope Stephen III established his authority independent of the Byzantine Empire and the Frankish Kingdom by holding the Roman Synod of 769,and he also extended the papal authority to Frankish Kingdom and Italy, even though Rome faced both internal and external crises. He thus laid a solid foundation for his successor Hadrian I to enhance further papal authority and expand the "Republic of St. Peter". For a long time, the foreign scholars have regarded Stephen III as the victim of political struggles, which not only underestimates his historical role but also ignores the complexity and diversity of the history of this period itself.
