Facts and Interpretations:The Limits of Historical Knowledge
【Abstract】 The historical facts included by historians in their interpretation are always those they think are important and significant.Historical facts, without doubt, have inherent significance of their own. However, the degree of their importance is not constant;rather, they keep changing along with the shift of value and focus of historians.Historical facts that are not necessarily significant in history can be valuable in historical research, and therefore hold a place in historical interpretations.Since historical facts are subject to the selection historians who picture them in language, there is no clear boundary between historical facts and historical interpretations. The limits of historical interpretations are restricted by historical materials;on the other hand however, historical interpretations can be subjective and inconstant.Historical interpretations are closely related to issue consciousness and theoretical awareness.Historical study should keep vigilant about the limits of its validity while absorbing theoretical sources and methods from other disciplines.
