ELECTRO-ACUPUNCTURE MODULATES THE NEURONAL FIRINGS OF ANTERIOR CINGULATE CORTEX IN RATS WITH INFLAMMATORY PAIN
【Abstract】 Objective: To investigate the effect of electro-acupuncture on neuronal firings in the anterior cingulate cortex(ACC) in inflammatory pain rats induced by intraplantar injection of complete Freund’s adjuvant(CFA). Methods: Male SD rats were divided into four groups: CFA group with electro-acupuncture, CFA group with sham electro-acupuncture, Control group with electro-acupuncture, and Control group with sham electro-acupuncture. The neuronal firings in the ACC were recorded before and after electro-acupuncture, with noxious heat stimulation by CO2 laser stimulator. The neuronal firings were processed with Mat Lab and Neuro Explorer, and analyzed with softwares Graph Pad Prism 5.0 and SPSS. Results: Electro-acupuncture increased the mean firing rate of ACC neurons in both CFA and Control groups, but decreased the standardized value of peak firing rate of neurons activated by noxious heat. Conclusion: Electro-acupuncture activated ACC neurons, and inhibited the excitatory responses of ACC neurons to noxious heat.
