【Abstract】 The well-known Canadian woman writer Alice Munro has created multiple female characters in her down-to-earth way of depicting average and daily women, whose gradual self-discovery in the suppressing patriarchal society is explored. Doree in Dimensions, in the passage of an unfortunate marriage, experiences a transformation from selflessness to self-discovery, one that can be clearly seen in the change of Doree’s language, which goes through a transformation from simplicity to complexity, passivity to activity, and negativity to positivity. The change serves as the trace of how Doree views and examines herself at different stages of life. The paper, through analyzing the language features, aims at revealing Munro’s skillful mastery and rich application of language in the characterization of her females.更多还原
