Motif of communication shadowed in ethnicity and culture in Everything I Never Told You
【Abstract】 The America-born Chinese American writer Celeste Ng narrates in her first novel Everything I Never Told You the conflicts and tension between Chinese ethics and native people, woman and career, parents’ expectations and children’s pressure, and favored child and neglected siblings, thus exhibiting an explicit representation of ethnicity and heterogeneous culture. Nevertheless,a close reading of the text finds an implicit motif of communication, highlighted by the author’s deployment of absence of communication that leads to the tragedy. The ethnicity and heterogeneous culture in the novel is more of a carrier of the author’s values, while the common issue of communication for modern people should be the spirit that touches the readers in different cultural context. This diversion towards common values beyond ethnicity reflects the feature of the new generation Chinese American literature.
