The Assimilation Dilemma for New Chinese Immigrants in Zimbabwe
【Abstract】 The new Chinese immigrants have made many contributions to Zimbabwe’s social and economic development since the mid-1980 s,but their assimilation into local communities is still problematic. In recent years, with the concentration of both inhabitation and commercial areas, the establishment of new immigrants’ associations, and the development of Chinese local media, the Chinese community in Zimbabwe is maturing gradually. But what has taken shape is an internally oriented social environment, which decreases the Chinese immigrants’ motivation and ability to assimilate into local communities. Furthermore, the interaction between them and the local people has generated some negative feelings towards each other, which means that Chinese immigrants have a difficult time in identifying Zimbabwe as their second hometown, and the local people cannot truly accept them. In order to adapt themselves into local communities, new immigrants have carried out a series of activities, including regulating their behaviors through internal initiatives, fulfilling social responsibilities and organizing large-scale cultural and sports activities with the local people. Those measures have achieved tangible results, but Chinese immigrants still have a long way to go before their assimilation into local communities.
