Ethical Issue of the Use of Looted Antiquities in Scientific Research
【Abstract】 Using looted antiquities in archaeological and historical research was prevalent among scholars in the past. However,it has become an issue of debate since the 1970 s in Europe and America.Supporters argue that archaeologists could do what they can to salvage information from looted materials, while many archaeologists hold that without provenience an antiquity has little value for archaeological research. Moreover, they believe that using the looted antiquities in research may enhance the market value of the antiquities and thus stimulate further looting and illegal trade that would bring destruction to archaeological sites and remains. In response to the ethical issues associated with the use of looted antiquity in research,American Antiquity,a journal administered by the Society for American Archaeology, adopted new editorial policies and the Society updated its statement on ethics.
