【Abstract】 This paper discusses the tone types and phonation types in the Xinghua dialect in Jiangsu province. There are two tonal varieties,old and new,in Xinghua. Some on-going sound changes are taking place such as the disappearance of falsetto,softening of the entering tones,etc. The old variety has two registers,upper and normal,and seven tones,one of which occurs with falsetto. The new variety has one register only and the number of tone categories is accordingly reduced to six. The tonal pattern of Xinghua,and some other phonological features,leads us to a proposal of a ‘Marginal Wu’for dialectal re-subgrouping.更多还原
