Renew the Past by Deep-Mapping the Historical Space on Heritage Sites
【Abstract】 The current conservation and use of Chinese Cultural Heritage Sites(CHS) have been dominated by western"Authorized Heritage Discourse"(AHD), which often leads to the dichotomy between time and space as well as material forms and intangible values. As a result, heritage sites are often prevented from functioning as a cultural interplay between the past and the present. Drawing on a case study from the Pan River, a sacred site in ancient Lu Kingdom of Confucius’ home place, this paper adopts the idea of"deep mapping"to explore the canonical meanings conveyed by the site through historical textual data. The various layers of meanings that were hidden in the historical space of the site as well as the connections between are thus unfolded. It is suggested that the conservation and use of heritage sites in China should break down the boundaries of the past and present, and of the tangible and intangible so as to construct a space where canonical meanings are brought in view for cultural and educational insights.
