【Abstract】 The Return of the Native is the first tragic novel indeed,and Thomas Hardy uses a large number of mythical and archetypal allusions and images in the description of the novel’s background and in the characterization of both male protagonist and female protagonist.The skilled use of archetypes shows that the rapid development of industrial civilization brings mankind so many internal contradictions in the choice of material living,praises the main consciousness which struggles against destiny between the traditional and the modern concept,reinforcing the tragic atmosphere of the novel from diversified aspects.更多还原
