【Abstract】 The China-Russia Crude Oil Pipeline from Mo’he to Daqing is strategically important for improving the energy safety of China through the diversification of petroleum supplies. The permafrost and marshes in Hinggan Mountains have a symbiotic relationship. However, the pipeline construction and operation will have some adverse impacts on the wetlands along the pipeline route through the damage to plant roots, vegetative coverage and peatlands, and through the disruptions of wetland surface resulted from the frost heaving and thaw settlement during the pipeline operation period. In turn, these processes will affect the heat-moisture processes of the underlying permafrost, posing a threat on the stability of the pipeline foundations and operational safety. These hazards can be mitigated by certain methods, such as the revegetation of the construction sites and addition of a peat layer between the foundation soils and the pipeline.
