【Abstract】 This article intends to focus on the embedded narratives in Joyce’s "The Dead" to explore their effects upon the story itself.Taking the form of dialogue and free indirect/direct discourse,the embedded narratives,as an effective narrative style,foreground different narrative levels,express various narrative intentions,and further expose the consciousness of the characters,narrators and the author himself.The article argues that Gabriel,the protagonist in the story,responds to the outside world through semantic/syntactic conflicts situated in dialogues as one kind of embedded discourse and through a conscious construction of balance in free indirect discourse as another.更多还原
