【Abstract】 This study attempts to shed new light on one of the most notoriously challenging aspects of English language instruction—the use and usage of shall.The semantic analyses of shall show that it has one core meaning and subsequently five representative usages.The frequency of shall in the past 83 years in the 100-million word TIME corpus is diachronically identified and analyzed.The findings indicate that the frequency of shall is conspicuously on the decrease by decade,but remains comparatively stable in the past 7 years.A more specific analysis indicates that not only are its five representative usages all in use,but some new usage has sprung up and accounts for over 11% of its use.The authors discuss how learners,teachers,and materials developers might utilize the findings of the study to improve instruction of the word shall in English language education and how they might utilize this research method to facilitate their own English language study.更多还原
