【Abstract】 This paper argues that the initial impetus to sort out and write about the history of American literature resulted from the development of American Studies.Where attempts in the early 20th century to come up with a coherent narrative of American literature were frustrated by the division between the high and the pop literature,the rising of American Studies and the criticism of American symbols and myths succeeded in bridging the gap between the two and creating the integrated symbol of the American mind.Literary History of the United States,edited by Spiller in 1948,marked the emerging of a unified narration on American writings.更多还原
