【Abstract】 This article points out that residential areas of different size constitute the hierarchy of central place,in which population size and density will only increase market scale of central places but not its functional rank. It also brings forward that the improvement of regional transportation,at the era of urbanization,facilitates the development of high-order central places but,at the time of suburbanization and counter-urbanization,engenders urban decline and boosts urban decline. Finally,it is concluded that global economy empowers small city with world market,and the urban functional rank will not be determined by population size but by urban competitiveness.更多还原
