Study of the levels of lead and eight trace elements among preschool children in Jinchang
【Abstract】 Objectives To investigate the current status of high level of blood lead among preschool children in Jinchang of Gansu Province, and explore the correlation between blood levels of Pb and Cu, Zn, V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ga, and Ge. Methods Blood samples of 256 children (aged from 2 to 7 years), randomly selected from kindergartens in Jinchang were analyzed. Levels of Cu, Zn, V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ga, and Ge were measured with atomic absorption graphiteingle method. Results (1) The mean blood level of lead in 256 children was (126.19 ± 52.19) μg / L (28.30 μg /L to 268.00 μg/L), and there were 160 children (62.54%) with lead poisoning (the blood lead level > 100 μg / L). (2) The blood levels of Cu and V in the male were lower than those in the female, the differences were statistically significant (P < 0.05 and P < 0.01, respectively). The blood levels of Zn and Ge in the group of 2 - 3 years were low- er than those in the group of 6 - 7 years, the differences were statistically significant (P < 0.01). (3) The blood level of Cu was higher in the high blood lead group than that of low blood lead group; the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05) . The blood levels of Zn, Mn, and Co were lower in the high blood lead group than those in the low blood lead group; the differences were statistically significant (P < 0.05 and P < 0.01, respectively). (4) Linear regression analysis between Pb and other trace elements showed that Pb level negatively correlated to Zn and Co levels. Conclu- sions The incidence of raised blood level of lead was high in Jinchang city. The management of environment pollution, timely determination of Pb-B in children, and pertinent delivery of health education and nutrition guidance for children should be strengthened. High blood level of lead may result in lower blood levels of Zn, Mn, or Co and increase of blood Cu level.
