【Abstract】 This article scrutinizes critically the critical system of Northrop Frye, the renowned Canadian literary theorist. The author expounds some key concepts within his system, such as the scientific nature of criticism and myth-archetypal criticism, and attempts to summarize the salient features of Frye’s theory, including mysticism, historical cycles, the denial of authorial subjectivity and originality. The conclusion is that the inherent incompatibility between Frye’s emphasis on scientific objectivity on the one hand, and his stress on myth criticism on the other, creates an inherent contradiction in his theoretical framework.更多还原
