【Abstract】 Objective: To evaluate the effect of HIV/AIDS education among heroin dependent patients. Methods: The epidemiological data including demographic data, HBV and HCV infection rates, and data of high-risk behavior were collected for 101 heroin dependent patients. An HIV/AIDS education was implemented to the subjects and an HIV-knowledge questionnaire was used to evaluate its effects. The feedback from all participants was collected to assess the feasibility and acceptability. Results: The subjects showed a relatively higher rate of high-risk behaviors such as unsafe sex and drug use. The HBV and HCV infection rates which were 56.4% and 46.5% respectively were relatively higher compared to that (both were about 10%) in general population. The subjects had a lower HIV-knowledge scores at intake (31.1±12.1) before the HIV/AIDS education which indicated that they lack HIV-knowledge. The scores were significantly improved to 97.29±7.42 after the HIV/AIDS education. The feedback from all participants showed that they presented a supportive and positive attitude to the HIV/AIDS education and they thought that it was very helpful for them. Conclusion: Heroin dependent patients are HIV/AIDS high-risk populations. HIV/AIDS education is feasible and acceptable among them and it has the effect of increasing HIV-knowledge, understanding the prevention methods and the scientific attitude to HIV/AIDS. More emphasis should be attached to HIV/AIDS education among drug addicts to decrease the possibility of HIV/AIDS infection and reduce drug’s harm.
