Utilization Status of Germplasm Resources of Creeper (Parthenocissus Planch)
【Abstract】 Creeper plants belong to Grape family. They are climber plants that are perennial lignification big lianas. There are about 15 species of creeper plants in the world. Creeper plants have adhesive discs, so that they can climb rocks, cliffs and walls. Most of these plants not only suit to wet and dark environment but also to strong sunshine. These plants can survive generally in wretched environment such as barren soils, cold and dry climate, and grow very well under suitable conditions. In this paper, basic biological characters of creeper plants and Japanese Creeper (Parthenocissus tricuspidata) were described. Practical utilization of Japanese creeper and Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia) was introduced and the studies and researches on creeper plants were reviewed. Utilization of Japanese creeper for perpendicular green of cities and barren mountains or sandy land is good examples of their utilization. Some researches show that Japanese creeper can grow well in barren soils, cold climate and other poor natural conditions. And it can be grown as a plant in sandy zone for soil and water conservation. Goats, horses, oxen and other domestic animals do not eat creepers. Therefore, plantation of many kinds of creeper could solve the conflict between Virescence and raising domestic animals in most parts of China. The Japanese creeper can be exploited as Chinese herb medicine for curing some gynecological diseases, internal diseases, orthopedic diseases, etc. Most creeper can be used as food also. The paper made suggestions and prospects on making green in sandy zone, barren mountain and other areas through planting of creepers.
