" He (Harmony)" and "De (Virtue)" in Music——on ideas of music esthetics of China and the West in ancient times
【Abstract】 This essay refers separately to the origins, definitions, functions of "He (harmony)" and "De (virtue)", the relationship between man and "He " and "De ", and the relationship between society and "He " and "De " in ancient Greece and ancient China. It also refers to the relations between the two terms. Comparatively speaking, we can conclude that He and De mean "humanistic virtue" and " natural beauty" in ancient Greek music but "political virtue" and "postnatal beauty" in ancient China. The author would tell us that the same terms have quite different meanings.
