【Abstract】 William Faulkner, winner of Nobel Prize for literature in 1950, is one of the most prominent writers in American literature. Based on the Southern history and social reality, his works have been regarded as the representative of the American Southern literature. In his famous short story A Rose for Emily, Faulkner uses symbolism to reveal the clashes between the new values and the old ones in the South by depicting Emily’s tragical love, which makes the novel profoundly thematic.
