Characteristics and controlling factors of heavy metal contents in urban soil s in Zhangzhou City, Fujian Province
【Abstract】 Human health in towns and cities is strongly dependent on the sta tu s of urban soils. Urban soils may be affected by industrial activities, traffic, agricultural practices, and waste disposal. Interest in trace elements in urban environments has rapidly increased as a consequence of the high levels of conta mination measured in some cities, and the associated potential health risks. Con centrations of Hg, Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn, As, Cr and Ni were measured in 108 topsoil sa mples collected from parks, residential areas and suburban agricultural soils in the city of Zhangzhou, Fujian Province, China in order to assess the distributi on of these heavy metals in the urban environment and identify possible sources of pollution, and other heavy element contents of the topsoils were determined t o find out the controlling factors of heavy metal contents and their distributio n. Mean contents of Hg, Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn, As, Cr and Ni in topsoils in Zhangzhou C ity are 0.471, 0.353, 75.9, 32.6, 106.7, 6.86, 29.7 and 12.8 mg/kg, respectively . Compared to the background values for soils in Fujian Province, Hg and Cd are the strongest enriched elements; Pb and Cu are moderately enriched elements; Zn and As are close to the background values; while Cr and Ni are lower than the ba ckground ones. Compared to soil environmental quality standards of China, Hg and Cd are the most seriously polluted elements in Zhangzhou City. And among the in vestigated soils, urban soils have the highest content of Hg, and vegetable soil s have the highest content of Cd. Heavy metal contents in urban soils and vegeta ble soils reflect human impacts on soils. Statistic approaches (correlation matr ix and cluster analysis) were adopted for identification of natural and anthropi c influence on heavy metal contents. The results demonstrate that the distributi on of Hg does not appear to be associated with any other elements, while S may b e capturer for Hg; As, Cr and Ni are elements controlled by pedogenesis; Cd and Pb are elements disturbed by anthropic contributions; Cu is mainly controlled by pedogensis and Zn is closely association with Mn oxides in soils.
