Microglia and Intracerebral Hemorrhage
【Abstract】 Microglia is the principal immune effector cell in brain. In normal conditions,it remains in "resting" and does not have any phagocytic function. Microglias are activated quickly and proliferate after intracerebral hemorrhage, then exert similar macrophage effector functions such as phagocytosis, and the dual effects by producing neurotoxic molecules and neurotrophic factors. The activation of protein kinase C, NF-κB and mitogen-activated protein kinase is the underlying mechanism of producing neurotoxic molecules in microglias after intracerebral hemorrhage. Appropriately suppressing the activation of microglias within a certain time window may decrease its cytotoxic effect and improve the prognosis of intracerebral hemorrhage.
