Hypoxia-induced Neurobehavioral Effects on Human in a Simulating High Altitude Work Environment
【Abstract】 Objective To assess the neurobehavioral effects of hypoxia under a simulating high altitude work environment. [Methods] A self-control study was conducted. 6 subtests(simple visual reaction time,SVRT; choice visual reaction time,CVRT; symbol digit substitution,SDS; continuous recognition memory,CRM; length discrimination,LD; and series addition and subtraction,SAS) of Neurobehavioral Evaluation System in Chinese version(NES-C) are applied to the evaluation of neurobehavioral effects among 64 volunteers recruited at the simulated high altitude environment. The subjects were classified into 4 subgroups according to the simulated high altitude at different height of 2 500 m,3 000 m,3 500 m and 4 000 m. Each subject is asked to perform the 6 sub-tests under normal and hypoxia work conditions. [Results] The SVRT was obviously delayed, suggesting that the ability of reaction is descended under a hypoxic environment; the performances of LD and CVRT were poorer although they did not show significantly difference from the baselines. By stepwise equation analyses, the results illustrated that the lower the arterial oxyhemoglobin saturation (SaO 2) determined, the poorer the neurobehavioral performance conducted, this was reflected in most of the results of the subtests, such as SDS,LD,SVRT and CVRT. [Conclusion] The results suggeste that acute hypoxic work environment deteriorates certain type of human neurobehavioral functions. The visual recognition and reaction abilities are significantly affected.
