Cyclopentadiene was formed from dicyclopentadiene at (180 °C). It reacted with sodium to form cyclodentadienyl sodium in ice water bath. Then bis-(cyclopentadienyl)-zirconium dichloride was prepared by the reaction of zirconium tetrachloride with cyclopentadienyl sodium at low temperature using xylene as solvent. The reaction took 3 h in nitrogen atmosphere and the yield was about 70%.
