Clay Mineral Distributions in Surface Sediments From the Western Arctic Ocean and Their Implications for Sediment Environments
【Abstract】 The clay mineral distributions in sufrace sediments from the Chukchi Sea and adjacent arctic deep sea are controlled by the sediment source and marine circulation structure. The sediments in the northeastern and northern study area are affected greatly by the kaolinite- and illite-rich sediments from the Canadian Makenzie River, the offshore sediments along the northwest Alaska coast are affected significantly by the sediments from the northwest Alaska rivers and coast, which are rich in chlorite and have variable kaolinite contents, and the sediments in the western study area are affected significantly by the chlorite-rich Siberian materials. The Pacific water passing through the Bering Strait brings in the Yukon River materials rich in smectite to spread northward to result in the high content of smectite in the central Chukchi Sea sediments, and the differential sorting of clay minerals also promotes the enrichment of smectite in the central Chukchi Sea.
