【Abstract】 This paper reviews that John Donne has always been regarded as the representative of the English “metaphysical” school of poetry,of which Donne was the founder.The word “metaphysical” was first used to describe the characteristic of Donne and other poets of the time by Dr.Samuel Johnson.The chief feature of this so called school was the excessive use of figures of speech called “wits” or “conceit”.The abounding vitality of the figures of speech that originated from them no longer existed,and were then due to intellectual ingenuity rather than to natural impulse.Anyhow,Metaphysical School was a new one coming to the fore,without parallel in history and it is hard for the later generations to imitate.更多还原
