Leisure activities, life events and Alzheimer’s disease
【Abstract】 Objective To evaluate the etiologic association between leisure activities, life events and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Methods An age, sex, educational level,1∶1 matched case control study was conducted in Beijing,Shanghai,Chengdu, and Xi’an.Cases and controls were drawn from a prevalence study of dementia in elderly population in these cities. The risk of AD related to leisure activities and life events were fitted to univariate and multivariate conditional Logistic model. Results Two hundred and eighty-two AD patients and 282 non-demented controls were recruited for the study. The mean incidence age of cases was 75.83±8.20 years old.The dose of participating leisure activities was quantitated by time-year,that is time of participation per day multiply year of participation. The OR for AD was negative correlated to the time-year of participating leisure activities after 40 years old or more ( OR =0.987,95% CI ,0.981 to 0.992).The OR for AD was 1.600 (95% CI ,1.014 to 2.525) for individuals who ever suffered from great negative events as compared with individuals who had never suffered from such events. The OR s was adjusted by marriage status, economic status, occupation, living status, and family history of first-degree relatives. The adjusted risk of AD decreased to 0.978 fold (95% CI :0.968 to 0.988) in every increased time-year of participating leisure activities. The adjusted OR for AD was 1.946 (95% CI ,1.052 to 3.599) for individuals who had ever suffered from great negative events,as compared with those had never suffered from such events. Conclusions The study demonstrated that participating leisure activities might have protective effects to AD,and suffering from great negative life events might have some relations to AD.
