【Abstract】 In this paper the author mainly discusses the relationship between genre and the theme with different semantic property. The discussion is carried out with the help of the theory of the semantic property division raised by Halliday. The data used in the paper are all derived from The Old Man and the Sea written by Hemingway. The conclusion is that genres prefer the Themes with certain semantic property realization, which can be regarded as one of the main characteristics on the language level to distinguish different text types. In a conversation or a long literary work, it can be used to identify the micro register texts embedded in a macro text, thus help increase the students’ reading and writing abilities.更多还原
