God’s Word and Human’s Conscience:Luther’s Dual Authority
【Abstract】 Luther’s thoughts have far-reaching consequences in the history of western thought. This essay attempts to offer an existential analysis of Luther’s thought, revealing the tension between his religious experiences and thinking activity, and demonstrating the power of the tension released in the history of thought. We should notice that Luther is a pious Christian while fiercely criticizing the dominant theoretical system of Christianity of that time, i.e. Roman Catholic theology. It should be a key step to us to understand the developing clue of the history of western thought by tracing its internal power as we consider that Luther attacked the system of mainstream thinking without any imported influence. This essay traces his destruction to the hermeneutic authority of the time and his advocacy of equal right in interpreting God’s word, and finds that lying behind these are his concepts of grace and conscience. In analyzing his concept of conscience, we encounter a dual authority implied in his thought. This is what we call Luther’s tension.
