【Abstract】 The paper holds that the mainstream literary thoughts of a rising and flourishing dynasty are state-oriented and those of a declining dynasty are invariably individually directed and that this fin de siecle sentiment is characterized by the prevailing carpe diem theme that pervades the poetical works of the Book of Poetry, Nineteen Ancient Rhymes, and the Later Tang Poetry.
