【Abstract】 The pragmatic meaning of a word is in its implied meaning, or the meaning that a speaker tries to convey. In our daily life, we often meet with such an occasion, in which a speaker addresses the same person with quite different appellations. This phenomenon is called substitution of appellatiion. However, the pragmatic meaning is quite different . Based on making an analysis of the substitution of Oliver’s addressing his father in Love Story, the article concludes that pragmatic meanings may be different from one occasion to another in the substitution of appellation, it makes closer or estranged the psychological distance of speakers rather than social distance.
