TERTIARY FOSSIL WINGED FRUITS OF PALAEOCARYA FROM NINGMING OF GUANGXI, S.CHINA
【Abstract】 INTRODUCTION The present winged fruit fossils belong to the organ genus Palaeocarya Saporta emend. Manchester (Manchester, 1987). They are found from the locality (22°07.690’N, 107°02.434’E) near Gaolingtun, 4 km to the south west of Ningming County, Guangxi Zhuangzu Autonomous Region. Apart from the present fossils of Juglandaceae, there are some other macro , micro plant and fish fossils from the same locality. The macro plant fossils include Osmundaceae, Pinaceae, Taxodiaceae, Fagaceae, Lauraceae, Leguminosae, Palmae and others. The fossils of Palaeocarya are widely distributed in the Tertiary strata of the Northern Hemisphere, but so far in China only one species, P. koreanica (Oishi) Manchester, is reported from Oligocene in Jilin Province (Guo Shuang xing et al., 2002). The present Palaeocarya fossils are numerous and rather well preserved. It is the first discovery of this fossil genus from southern China and it will end the history that there was no fossil record of the related modern genus, Engelhardia , in its present distribution center and this new record would provide an important clue for searching the evolution of the Tribe Engelhardieae.
