【Abstract】 Are there tragedies in Chinese classical dramas? This has been a dispute for almost one century. For one hundred years, the viewpoints on the issue varied greatly and no conclusion has ever been drawn from the arguments. The main reason is that it is difficult to set up the unified criterion for the judgement of tragedy. As an aesthetics category, tragedy has its own characteristics and standard. Only if we probe into the history of tragedy theories and analyze the recognized tragedy works,can we establish the basic characteristics of the tragedy.
